City Arts Portsmouth backs Portsmouth’s bid to become UK City of Culture 2029

Over the past few years we have worked across the city with artists, residents and local partners to create accessible ways for people to take part in creativity. Through POSE Portsmouth Open Studios, exhibitions, workshops and mentoring we see both sides of culture: people discovering creativity and artists gaining visibility.

Our projects take place in studios, community venues and public spaces across Portsmouth, involving artists, volunteers, local businesses and residents, including many people encountering cultural activity for the first time.

That visibility matters. When artists can show their work locally they build confidence, develop professional connections and sustain their practice, while residents meet the people shaping the city’s culture.

For us, culture is not limited to galleries or theatres. It exists in everyday life, in shared spaces, local stories and communities coming together. Creativity supports wellbeing, builds confidence and helps people feel connected to where they live.

Through our work we regularly see friendships formed, first-time exhibitors gaining confidence and local businesses benefiting from increased footfall during events.

Collaboration between organisations, volunteers and communities is already growing across Portsmouth. This bid offers the opportunity to strengthen support for artists, widen participation and create lasting opportunities across the city.

We are proud to stand alongside Portsmouth Creates and Portsmouth City Council in supporting the ambition for Portsmouth 2029.

We’re backing the bid because we see every week what happens when artists are visible and communities are invited to take part.
