City Arts Portsmouth and Habitat Harbours: Delivering Artecology’s CoCreate Workshops for Portsmouth and Beyond
City Arts Portsmouth is proud to be the regional delivery partner for Artecology’s groundbreaking ‘Habitat Harbours CoCreate’ initiative, bringing their innovative blend of art and science to the Portsmouth area. As part of this collaboration, we facilitate workshops that empower local communities to actively engage in eco-engineering projects designed to benefit both people and wildlife
Shaping Better Spaces for People and Wildlife Alike
Artecology, an interdisciplinary organisation based on the Isle of Wight, is at the forefront of regenerative, nature-inclusive design. Founded by Nigel George and Ian Boyd, Artecology merges art, science, and eco-engineering to address pressing environmental challenges, with a particular focus on combating biodiversity loss. Their work aligns with the principles of the Isle of Wight UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which advocates for harmony between human activity and the natural environment.
The CoCreate Initiative: Engaging Communities in Nature-Inclusive Design
Artecology’s CoCreate initiative extends this mission by actively involving communities in the creation of eco-friendly structures. These hands-on workshops guide participants in crafting textured clay pieces that become integral components of innovative designs like Vertipools and Refugia Panels. These structures not only provide essential habitats for wildlife but also contribute to cutting-edge research in Nature Inclusive Design.
City Arts Portsmouth: Local Leaders in Eco-Art Engagement
Through the ‘Habitat Harbours CoCreate’ workshops, City Arts Portsmouth brings this transformative experience to local community groups across Portsmouth and surrounding areas. Participants learn about biodiversity, eco-engineering, and the critical role of citizen science in environmental stewardship. By crafting these clay pieces, attendees contribute directly to enhancing local ecosystems while gaining a sense of ownership and empowerment in addressing today’s environmental challenges.

Collaborating on Portsmouth’s Vision and Mission
Artecology and City Arts Portsmouth are also part of ‘Shaping Portsmouth’s Vision and Mission’ to transform Portsmouth Harbour into a thriving urban wildlife ecosystem, to the benefit of everyone in the region who lives, works, and plays there.
