I’m Jamie O’Neill, a Portsmouth-based photographer exploring identity, memory, and place. My work for POSE merges my artistic practice with my role at Portsmouth Historic Quarter (PHQ), focusing on the Portsmouth Royal Dockyard Historical Trust (PRDHT) based in Storehouse 10. Through digital photography, I’ve documented their ongoing efforts to preserve, catalogue, and clear confidential materials from Storehouse 9—quiet but vital heritage work that often goes unseen.
This project became deeply personal when I discovered my late grandad’s name in the dockyard’s rate books—he was once an apprentice here. Later, we also found my great-great-grandad listed. These moments of connection to the site’s legacy gave emotional weight to the work, reinforcing the powerful bond between the People In Pompey and their heritage.
Photography has always been my passion, and this role has allowed me to create purposeful, emotionally rich work that gives back to the city I love.
